HIIT vs. Strength Training: Which Is Right for You?
It’s one of the most common questions in fitness: should I focus on HIIT or strength training? The short answer is both. But understanding the differences — and how each one serves your goals — helps you train smarter and get better results.
At The FIIT Co. in downtown Denver, we’ve built our entire class schedule around the idea that you need both high-intensity conditioning and dedicated strength work. Here’s why.
WHAT IS HIIT?
HIIT stands for High-Intensity Interval Training. It involves short bursts of all-out effort followed by brief rest periods. A typical HIIT circuit might include 30–45 seconds of explosive movement (like burpees, box jumps, or battle ropes) followed by 15–30 seconds of rest, repeated across multiple rounds.
The benefits of HIIT are well-documented. It’s efficient, with most sessions lasting under 45 minutes. It burns more calories per minute than traditional cardio. It elevates your metabolism for hours after the workout (the “afterburn” effect). It improves cardiovascular endurance quickly. And it builds mental toughness.
At The FIIT Co., our FIIT Push/Pull classes and Hustle sessions are built around HIIT principles. They’re fast, intense, and designed to challenge your cardiovascular system while building functional endurance.
WHAT IS STRENGTH TRAINING?
Strength training focuses on building muscle through resistance — using weights, bands, or bodyweight to challenge your muscles under load. Unlike HIIT, the goal isn’t to spike your heart rate. It’s to progressively overload your muscles so they grow stronger over time.
The benefits of strength training go far beyond aesthetics. It increases bone density, especially critical as you age. It boosts your resting metabolic rate by adding lean muscle. It improves joint stability and reduces injury risk. It enhances functional movement for daily activities and sports. And it builds the kind of strength that makes you more capable in every aspect of life.
Our Strength Upper and Strength Lower classes at The FIIT Co. are dedicated to this kind of focused work. We program upper/lower body splits throughout the week so members can train specific muscle groups effectively with adequate recovery between sessions.
SO WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
If your primary goal is fat loss, HIIT is extremely effective for burning calories quickly and keeping your metabolism elevated. But without strength training, you risk losing muscle along with fat, which slows your metabolism long-term.
If your primary goal is building muscle, strength training is essential. But without conditioning work, your cardiovascular fitness suffers, and you may lack the endurance to push through demanding workouts.
If your goal is overall fitness, health, and longevity, you need both. Period.
This is exactly why The FIIT Co. programming rotates between strength-focused and HIIT-focused classes throughout the week. Members who attend 4–5 classes per week get a balanced mix of both training styles without having to think about programming.
HOW THE FIIT CO. COMBINES BOTH
Here’s what a typical week at The FIIT Co. might look like for a member:
Monday: Strength Upper — focused lifting for chest, shoulders, back, and arms. Tuesday: FIIT Push — high-intensity circuits targeting the front of the body. Wednesday: Strength Lower — squats, deadlifts, and lower body accessory work. Thursday: FIIT Pull — high-intensity circuits working the posterior chain. Friday: Hustle — a coach-programmed bootcamp-style session mixing everything together. Saturday: Boxing/Kickboxing — heavy bag work, pad drills, and conditioning.
This rotation ensures you’re building strength, improving cardiovascular fitness, and giving each muscle group adequate recovery time. You never have to choose between HIIT and strength training — the program does it for you.
